First big outing in Texas

So a friend invited us to go to the Aquarium on Monday.  I had originally thought that it would just be me, Chris and the girls.  Then I remembered that is was Martin Luther King day so Damon and Tyler could come too.  We went as part of a 'preschool' group.  It was how we got such a great deal on tickets.  I guess a mom in another ward teaches and she got us and a bunch of other families tickets.

The drive wasn't bad, I-45 is a big and busy freeway, but at that time of day we didn't really have any bad traffic.  It took us about 30 minutes to get there.  I followed my friend Kasi so I wouldn't get lost.  We got there early so we waited a bit for it to open.

We went through the exhibit first.  It was nice, but the Denver one is much bigger.  They do have a cool white tiger at the end that the kids liked.  We also got to touch the Sting Rays.

The fun thing about this aquarium is that it has rides.  We went on the train ride twice; (you get to go through a tunnel to see shark swimming overhead); the carousel twice; the Ferris wheel (Damon was nervous to go); and Tyler, Chris, and I went on a falling type ride.  They also had a mini 'Frog Hopper' version that even the girls went on.  They were startled, then Kaylee liked it, but Jenna remained concerned.  It was a bit jerky.  By then is was about lunch time so we loaded up in the van and I had them eat lunch on the way home.  I do this in hopes that it will keep the girls awake - not this time.  But they did transfer when we got home and they took a really good nap.  I guess we wore them out.  It was a fun outing to do with the kids.

Yes, Tyler is giving bunny ears to Damon - typical brother.
It was very bright on the Ferris wheel.  The aquarium in right off of I-45.
The view on the other side, the Houston skyline.
Chris and the girls really liked the carousel - I don't think they had been on one before.

Tyler and Chris loved this ride.  Chris was just tall enough.  They wanted to go again, but we ran out of time, and Damon was feeling left out.  He was good to watch the girls along with my friend Kasi.

Tuesday I went to kickboxing - it was a good workout.
Wednesday I went to the Zumba class and then to play group.  I went to the wrong park originally but we finally found it.  Thank goodness for cell phones and Google Maps.
Thursday I had thought I was going to go to story time in the morning, but then I realized I had the wrong day - it had been Tuesday.  So I did a big grocery shopping trip with the kids instead.  They were being pretty bad at the beginning, but thankfully they calmed down for the second half.  I spent over $200.  There were a lot of things on sale that I usually stock up on and my pantry/food storage is pretty low - so it was time to fill it up.  It took almost 2 hours to go, shop, pay, and unload everything.  And of course it was raining pretty hard.  I brought out my laundry basket to put the bags in so I didn't have to make as many trips.   My visiting teachers came over afterwards and actually helped me unload the last of my groceries and then we visited for quite awhile.

Naps are getting harder, the girls don't want to go down as easily and if they nap too long they don't want to sleep at night.  But if they don't nap they are so grumpy at night.  Such a hard time.

Friday I made sugar cookies and I delivered them in the evening to my visiting sisters and my companion.  I actually took all the kids since Doug had come home not feeling well.  Then we all went to McDonald's to

play in the Play-place.

Saturday was clean out the garage day.  I wish I would have taken a before and after shot.  It was so full of boxes, mostly empty ones, plus all of our basement things.  We took everything out and then Doug hung up our bikes, put up shelves, hung the tools, and hooked up the pulley system for our Sky Box.  It looks a lot better now and we can almost park the van - we just have a few more things to get rid of.

I also cleaned the house with the kids in the morning.  They are pretty good helpers.  Damon is good to just get his jobs done because he wants to play quickly when he is done.  Tyler gets distracted and plays too much and is therefore much slower getting his jobs done.  It was too bad this week because we told Tyler that if he got his jobs done by 9 he could go with Damon and Doug to do scouting for food.  Well, he didn't quite make it.  He was close but we knew this would hopefully be a good learning opportunity - so he stayed home.  He was so mad and upset for a long time.  When he finally calmed down I talked to him.  I hope he learned something :).

Face-book has been helpful here.  I am part of a local mom's group and the info I have found has been very useful.  I located someone who needed boxes and she came and took all of our boxes and packaging paper - so that was great.  I also posted a few things that we didn't need anymore and got some them off of our hands quickly.  Hopefully the others will go soon.

Today I got called as the 2nd counselor in the Primary and Doug is going to be team teaching Christopher's class.  I think Doug has only taught once in primary back in Logan, and that was with me teaching Sunbeams.  So this will be a change for him, but he will do great.  I was in a primary presidency in our apartment ward in Logan, but that was 5/6 years ago.  The primary is huge, I have a lot of name learning to do.  We had a linger longer after church today.  We didn't visit too much - too hard when you helping kids and keeping track of them.

I think that's all that has been going on this week.  As a side note, Jenna is pretty much potty trained.  She has been in underwear 24/7 all week and has only had a few times where she just didn't get to the bathroom in time.  Kaylee however has regressed and is back in diapers.  She doesn't even try to tell me anymore when she needs to go.  She did manage to take off a messy diaper and then told us she had gone poo.  Luckily it wasn't too big of a mess.  (sorry TMI)  So hopefully Kaylee can get back on track here shortly.  I guess I'll just have to start over with her again, she probably just wasn't ready or something.  Sigh, we are almost done with diapers. :)

Second week in Texas

Our second week here was pretty good (it’s hard looking back and trying to remember).  It was pretty cold and dreary all week so I just picked up the kids at school.  I did some more organizing throughout the week and now I feel most things in the house are done except my sewing and craft stuff.  We are looking at putting in cabinets above our built-in desk, and that is where most of that will go.

Doug and I set up the new TV, it looks nice and is plenty big.  I was a little worried the first time we watched something because the picture looked really weird, like a BBC show or something.  Doug searched around and discovered that a setting was on called ‘sit-com’ and it made the picture look funny.  So now it looks better.

Wednesday I tried to go to play group.  I think I found where the park was, but it was so cold and no one was there.  Come to find out that they had changed the location and I hadn’t received the email, oh well.  Thursday was Relief Society.  I learned a few more names and got to visit with some moms about the area so that was good.  Also on Thursday I visited with Tyler’s school teacher and learned a bit more how the school is run here.  They are big on grades and take their academics seriously.  Tyler has team teachers, so I met with both of them, they seemed nice and said that Tyler was doing well.

Friday I got to clean our new house for the first time.  I must say that cleaning these bathrooms, counters, and floors will be easier than in Firestone.  I do not miss my tile at all!  I still have tile floors, but they are a very large tile, so less grout to worry about.

Saturdays are always busy.  Doug did a bunch of errands looking at blinds and buying ceiling fans, floor boards for the attic, and some more tools.  I worked in the garage a bit grabbing boxes that I thought I could fit in the kids’ closets or under beds – time to get creative with storage.  I also ran to the store real quick with Chris.  This is when he bought his birthday presents with his grandparent money.  I was basically running through Walmart to get the other things I needed.  This store is set up like the one in Vernal was, but it is hard to remember where things are.

We had been invited over for dinner at a neighbor’s house with some other families.  We were late because our errands took so long, but it ended up being fine.  Doug probably wished that he could have stayed home working on projects, but I told him you can do projects anytime and only make friends when you are invited. J  It was a fun evening and we enjoyed getting to know some more families here.  We ended up trying out Doug’s new saw in the dark with head lamps. Lol.

Sunday I got to help in nursery.  They are working on finding a third leader for the older nursery class.  There are 17 on the role and most of them come.  I think there were 12-13 there.  It was kind of fun to be with the girls, but I don’t know if I’d want to do it every week.   It is beautiful weather right now, I think I will like the winters here.  It was 65/70 degrees; we were all hot in the car.

Wow, I think that catches me up.  This week I’ll try to go to play group.  I can also choose between going to kick-boxing, Zumba, story time at the library, and story time at a nature center, so we’ll have to see what we do.

Fun new twist on the headband braid hair-do.

First week of school

Monday was still a holiday here so I was able to go to the school with Damon’s and Tyler’s records and get them all signed up.  There was a ton of papers to fill out. I had done quite a few online so I didn’t think there would be that many.  I started filling them out there – with all five kids running around in the front office- but then decided to finish them at home and bring them back.  It took me almost an hour to fill them all out.  We checked out the closest park in the afternoon and enjoyed the warmer Texas weather.

The boys helped me unwrap a lot of the kitchen things.  It takes a long time to unbox some stuff because every single cup or plate is wrapped in paper.  I did some more of the kitchen in the evening and found our plates.  I had packed a few plates and our silverware and brought them with us so that we could have them from the beginning.  We learned from our last move, where we didn’t find the utensils until 4 -5 days after we moved in.

Tuesday Doug was nice to go into work a bit late so I could take the boys to school without the other kiddos.  We discovered that there is quite a line to drop kids off.  We found their classrooms and I got the things I needed to pick them up after school.  The staff warned me of the long line for pick up as well.  I left around 2:45 (school is out at 3:05) and got a pretty good spot in line.  But I still had to wait until about 3:15 to get the boys.  The have a pretty good system here.  There is a staff member waiting at the corner where she reads off the name of your student(s) and their grade(s) into a hand radio where they announce it in the building.  They tell the parent to park at a certain number sign posted along the driveway and they tell the student(s) to go to that number to meet their parent.  It just takes a while to get through the line.

What Jenna looks like at 5:00 when she doesn't take a nap.

Wednesday the weather was pretty good so I told the boys that they would sign up as ‘walkers’ today and I would pick them up in the bike trailer with Tyler’s scooter, Damon would just walk home.  It took us about 15 min. to get home. (It was quite the feat to get the bike trailer unburied in the garage and get everyone bundled up and ready to go).  The good thing about biking was that Jenna and Kaylee took a nap in the trailer.
I had been giving them quiet time together in their room and they weren’t napping.  Now I have Jenna nap in our room and Kaylee nap in their room and that works better.

Thursday I tried parking across the street from the school on a side street and had the boys walk to me there, that seems to work the best if we don’t want to ride bikes.  It has been pretty cold and rainy since we got here so we have only ridden our bikes that one time.

School here is early –at 7:30 I have the kids get their coats and shoes on because it takes us 10 minutes to do that and get loaded in the van.  Announcements start at 7:50 and the bell rings at 8:05.  So I have to wake the boys up at 6:45, they get dressed and eat and then we go.  No more morning cartoons for us. I kind of like it, but I wish it wasn't so rushed.  I get up around 6, being ready for the day by 6:30-6:45 so I can be wonder mom J

The boys seem to be doing ok.  I emailed their teachers and they say that they are doing well.  Their homework seems to be about the same level, there is just a bit more of it.  Damon is complaining a bit that there is more and that school is hard. He is having a harder time adjusting.  The other night he came to us crying that he wanted to move back to Colorado.  We talked with him and tried to get him to see things positively.  He had a better day the next day.  He just isn’t as social as Tyler and really could use a good friend.  There isn’t anyone in is class that is in our ward.  The school is big, there are 10 4th grade classes, probably about that many of the other grades as well.

I finally got the kitchen all put away on Friday the 9th, one week from moving in.  I asked my visiting teacher to watch the kids for a couple of hours and that helped so much to get the last of the food and pantry stuff organized.  It was tricky to fit everything – we are missing our basement for all of our food storage.

I went to book club here and met some new people.  Everyone seems nice it just takes a while to get to know everyone.

Saturday was just more unpacking – Doug really got working on putting the hardware on the cabinets.
Before
After - nice right?

Sunday was normal church and trying to learn more people’s names. I found some clothes that had been given to us awhile ago that I had forgotten about, fun to wear new dresses.

Happy Birthday Christopher

Sunday was Chris's birthday, 5 year old!  He is getting so big.  I had a packed a birthday box with his presents already wrapped and it had everything I needed to make a cake (mix, oil, mixer, pan, shortening for the frosting etc).  I was grateful for a mom in the ward who actually had some leftover frosting and she let me use that, so I didn't have to make any.  We went for a Plane Fire and Rescue theme this year - it was quick and easy.  So that is what I did Saturday evening late :)

Doug captured some fun expressions as Chris opened his presents, he was pretty excited about some of them.

He got some more Zip track pieces, a new Skylander figure, Planes figures, and clothes from us, a rocket launcher from Grandma Datwyler, and with the money from Grandma Petersen I took Chris to the store and he bought another Skylander, another Swich 'n Go dinosaur, and a little dragon.

Chris is a fun boy, he is starting to ask lots of questions, especially what does ___ mean?"  The other day he asked if we get to have the same name when we go up to Heaven.  I wonder what he thinks about sometimes.  He also is starting to figure out what letter words start with.  I feel bad that he didn't really get a professional preschool experience, but I think he will be ok for Kindergarten.  I'm going to look here in Spring for something.

Chris has also gotten pretty dramatic lately too.  He will get really upset sometimes and just flip out.  I hope he grows out of this phase and can control his anger better.  I feel bad because he probably gets this from me.

We were invited to dinner while at church and that was so nice.  It turned out to just be an older man who lives alone.  He has adult children and I’m guessing a divorced wife.  He was very enthusiastic with the kids and made a very nice meal.  Ham, baked sweet potatoes, fancy green salad, baguettes with oil and herbs to dip into, steamed cauliflower, and he made some mac and cheese for the kids.  The kids did pretty well, the girls had just woken up so they were a bit grumpy.  They started getting crazy afterwards so we didn’t stay long.  But it was a very nice welcoming gesture. We had cake when we got home (I forgot to buy ice cream as the store - silly mom).

Happy Birthday Chris, we are lucky to have you in our home.

Our new house in Spring Texas

Saturday morning I had asked the RS for some help with the kids, so the girls went to one house and the boys went to another.  Doug and I went to Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Best Buy.  We needed to buy a fridge.  Our food was still in a cooler outside.  We had our big freezer in the garage so that was good for our frozen stuff.  So we checked everything out and liked one at Best Buy.  They couldn’t deliver it until next Tuesday, but we were hoping to get one that day.  They said if Doug picked it up we could have it since they had one in stock.  So we ate a quick lunch at Firehouse Subs (ooh it tasted so good – I think I was really hungry), then went home.  I picked up the kids and Doug went to go get the fridge.   We also picked up a big flat screen TV for the movie room (that was kind of fun J ).
The rest of the day was a bit of a blur.  I tried to be mom and get some unpacking done.  I was glad we had enough left-overs to do dinner with.  I helped Doug a bit with the fridge.  It was quite a project just to get it in the door.  First he tried to take the front door off of the hinges, but they were painted shut and wouldn’t budge.  So then he had to take the doors off of the fridge.  It was a bit tricky, but Doug figured it out.  So by the end of the day we had a nice new stainless steel French door refrigerator.  Doug hooked up the old TV in the media room earlier in the day so the kids watched movies and played the wii.  I checked out the Kroger grocery store, it is only about 5 minutes away so that is good.  It is bigger than King Soopers, but has a lot of the same Kroger brand stuff.  There is a full baby section and a full toy row (Legos and everything).  I ran into a nice couple in the parking lot, the wife grew up in Mendon and they had met at USU (true Aggies); pretty funny how it’s a small world.

Sunday morning was a scramble to find church clothes.  We hadn’t unpacked all of the clothing boxes and I hadn’t packed those things with me since I knew we would be in the house by Sunday.  We found everything except Doug’s nice belts.  He had to wear his regular one with his suit – oh well.
The ward seems nice and there is a big primary.  Now comes the task of finding friends for the kids to play with and getting to know everyone.  Our Firestone ward must have been on the ball because they read in our records that day – so we had our new ward on our LDS tools app.  So it is good to know where people live and have their info.

The Big Move!

Well, here is the long journal entry from our move.  It was quite an adventure getting to Texas.

Sunday evening we had an added element to our move.  Doug turned up the heat a degree before he went bed and noticed that it didn't turn on.  He tried lots of things – googling heater questions.  He found out that the heating element had burned out.  Then he went about turning on our gas fireplace (we had never turned it on because of the girls).  Then he was worried about Carbon Monoxide gases if he left it on all night, so he turned it off.  So he put an extra blanket on everyone and came to bed, by this time it was 2:00 am.  The girls joined us about 4:30 and then we got up around 5:30.  Poor Doug.  He went to Home Depot first thing Monday morning to see if they had the part we needed, but of course they didn't.  A while back my friend had needed her furnace fixed and I had asked her for the guy’s number.  So I looked up that text and Doug contacted him and he had the part at his house so Doug went over and bought it from him and fixed the furnaceJ.  That was one extra headache that we didn't need, but I was grateful that Doug was able to fix it.

So the movers were supposed to come before 10 but because is was snowing they didn't get there until around 11:30.  I dropped the kids off at a friend’s house and I did a few errands.  I had a few more farewell cards to deliver and some items to return to people.   The kids stayed until lunch and then I realized that we really couldn't go home so I set up more play dates.   Damon went to Dalton’s one last time and Tyler went to Blake’s.  The girls and Chris went to the Reynolds.  I stayed and visited with them, then picked up Damon and Tyler around 4:30.  My friend Ashley brought us dinner that night which was so wonderful.  It was super yummy too; I’ll have to get her recipe.  The movers were still there packing up but they finally finished around 7:30.  We still had our beds up, but everything else was boxed up – except what I had packed in suitcases.

Tuesday morning a different moving team showed up around 8:00.  They started wrapping things and putting cardboard down and tape on the stairs. It was still snowy so they didn't want to track in slush.  I took the kids over to the Reynolds again and they stayed there all day.   We are so grateful for them and all they have done for us.  Our kids will miss their family so much.  I went back to the house to help Doug.  I stripped beds, took apart the crib and toddler bed, took apart the storage shelves downstairs, and gathered up other miscellaneous items.  We ordered pizza for the movers and ate lunch, then I drove into town to return our DVR to Comcast and I dropped off the toddler bed to a friend (the girls will be sleeping in a queen bed in Texas).  The one main inconvenience about packing up was the weather, it was snowing on and off and it was so cold, around -3 most of the day.  We had the door open a lot of course so we turned the heat off (yeah so glad we fixed it) so it was pretty cold in the house.  If you were working it felt ok, but some of the time I wasn’t moving enough and my feet were cold the whole day.

We were planning to drive to Colorado Springs for this night.  We were going to have to sleep in a hotel anyway and this way we could make a head start on our driving.  I didn’t want to drive in the dark so I was hoping to leave before 4.  We realized that the packers were not going to be done before then so we asked if we could leave before they were all loaded.  They said we could so we loaded up the van and the truck with the things we were bringing.   The moving company couldn’t take liquid things and our gas cans and other things – so we had a few things like that in addition to our clothes and food items.
I managed to fit all our freezer and fridge food in our 3 coolers.   I had been trying to eat up all of our freezer stuff so we did pretty well.

We went and picked up the kids around 3:45 – it took a while to load up and say good-bye, so hard to leave friends.  I think we finally got going around 4:30.   I had Damon and the girls with me in the van and Doug had Tyler and Chris in the truck.  It was starting to get dark and it was still snowing L.  In the beginning the roads were ok, but after Denver it was so cold that the water was freezing on the windshield.  I couldn't see very well.  I tried to use the washer fluid, but that almost covered the whole windshield in ice.  It came off a bit, but I only had a small opening to see through.  I don’t see as well at night, so it was a stressful 2 ½ hours for me.  Damon was a good helper and they all just watched a movie.  I was very glad once we got to our hotel.

Doug had booked us rooms in the residence part of the Marriot hotel.  This way we had two bedrooms with a little living area and kitchen.  It worked well, and only Chris had to sleep on the floor.  That first night was pretty hectic getting all of our stuff in and settled.  Then Doug ran to McDonald’s while we had baths.  I think we ate at 8:00pm – pretty late for us.  But we were in good spirits and the kids went to bed ok.

Wednesday December 31, we really remembered why we don’t eat out very often with the kids.  At the breakfast buffet at the hotel it was crazy.  Just imagine trying to balance at least 3 plates while getting orders from 3-5 kids on what they want and cooking waffles for all of them and getting juice and fruit and cereal and syrup and bacon and eggs . . . .  It was chaos.  We found a spot a little away from the main group so we wouldn't annoy people too much.  The kids don’t eat well in public places – and the girls really don’t eat well.  Then of course Chris kicks the table and sends Tyler’s juice flying through the air getting Tyler and others all wet and sticky.  Doug and I were already getting frustrated with things.  It took a while to load up the van – I had brought a lot of snacks and food so that we could survive on the road – so there were a lot of bags.  Damon and Tyler were good to shuttle the bags to Doug so he could load them up.  We finally pulled out around 10:00.  We were driving to Amarillo, Texas for this leg of the trip.

About 10:30 I did the math and realized that I didn't have enough gas to get us to our lunch destination, so we had to pull over in Pueblo.  Doug wanted to fill the truck tires with air and was frustrated when the one at the gas station was broken – so we had to drive around to find another one.  We finally really got on the road and made it to Raton for lunch.  We made the mistake of eating at a Denny’s for lunch.  We thought it would be nice to sit and eat, but it really just took too long and again – our kids don’t do well in restaurants.  This time Jenna decided to take a drink of my lemonade and proceeded to dump the whole thing down her front.  Most of the kids also had to use the restroom twice and they only had two waitresses so it took so long to get our food.  The girls really didn’t eat much and I had to send my chicken sandwich back – it was too pink for me and I didn’t want to get sick.  So again we finally got back on the road and made it to Amarillo around 6:00.

We stopped at KFC and ate in our room, that worked much better.  Then we all got on our swimming suits and headed to the pool.  The water in the big pool was FREEZING, I guess they think it’s hot most of the year so they don’t bother to heat it.  So we stayed in the hot tub most of the time.  Damon, Tyler, Doug and I ventured into the big pool for a bit, but we didn't last long.  I had bought some float rings on clearance at the end of summer and those worked perfect for the girls and Chris.

Then it was time for bed – we put the girls down on our bed, then transferred them to the pull-out in the main room when we were ready to go to bed.  It worked pretty well.  Most of the nights all the kids slept well, but the first night the girls had a harder time and I had to sleep with them for a bit on the pull-out.

Doug and I didn’t really have time to watch a movie or anything – in the evening I would clean things up and then get stuff ready for the next day’s travels (snack bags etc.)  No we did not stay up to watch the ball drop for New Year's Eve.

Thursday January 1, 2015!! Happy New Year! Learning from our past experiences I went downstairs and loaded up a bunch of food for us all to eat in our room; everyone ate much better that way.  We left a bit earlier today around 9:30 and were headed to a city call Vernon for lunch – about 2 ½ hours away.  The roads were wet and there was spray from cars on the road.   I followed a bit further behind Doug so I could see better.  Damon had been asking if he could ride with Doug, but it really was better if Damon stayed in the van to help the girls, so we decided that Doug would drive the van today and I would drive the truck.

About 10 minutes before we got to our lunch stop we had some excitement.  I was following Doug and getting ready to pass a semi.  When I was right at the side of the truck I noticed he turned his left blinker on (turns out there was an accident up ahead and he was trying to get over to give them some room – I hadn’t seen the police lights).  So I sped up a bit to pass him quicker so he could get over, but because of the lights up ahead Doug slowed down, so then I had to brake.  All this time I was edging closer to the side of the road because the truck was moving over – I felt like I was going to get pushed off of the road.  The roads were very icy in this area, so when I hit my brakes I started fish-tailing.  The back of the truck went to the left, then right and then when it went to the left again we slid off the road.  I thought at the time that the truck had hit me, but now we think the bump I felt was just the result of the truck going into the grass.  So while we are fish-tailing and sliding out of control I am thinking: “wow this is really happening, I am going off the road in a car accident.”  Then as we continued to slide we got close to the other road with oncoming traffic.  For a second I thought: “oh no, this could be it, we are going to get hit and die,” but then I saw that there weren’t any cars coming and we continued to turn and ended up back in the median facing 180 degrees from where we started.  As we went off the road I said “hold on to the boys,” but I don’t think they really knew what was happening until it was over.  Here are my ruts.

After we had stopped I asked the boys if they were ok and just sat there for a moment.  I’d never been in this type of situation before, I wondered if I needed to call the police, but I just called Doug and of course just got his voice mail on his phone and his work phone.   While we were waiting there we saw another car slide off the road just in front of us.  The car did about what we had done, but then kept going and got back up onto the road and pulled over.  It was a grandma – she walked around her car to check things and then went on her way.  So then I realized I could probably just go too.  So I put the truck in 4 wheel drive and backed up a bit, but then couldn’t really go anymore.  Then Doug called me and asked if I was ok.  I sort of laughed and said we were ok.  Doug asked where I was – he couldn’t see me following him and then we realized that he hadn’t noticed that I had slid off the road.  So I filled him in.  He was of course surprised and concerned and said he was coming back to us.  It turned out that as he was trying to turn on an emergency turn around spot he started sliding and he went into the grass to slow down, then got back on the road and turned around at the next one.
After I had talked to Doug he told me to try to drive out, so I edged forward to the left side of the road- heading back the way we had come.  When Doug got there we checked the truck and didn’t see anything – so we slowly headed back onto the road.  I got over into the right lane thinking we were going to take the first exit to turn around.  Then I see Doug flashing his lights at me (I was in the lead) and I realized that he wanted me to turn left at one of the emergency turn around spots.  So I had to quickly get over and slow down.  I was going a bit too fast because I didn’t realize I would be stopping soon, but I made it ok, grateful that I didn’t slide again.

As we drove those next few miles into Vernon we saw at least 8 cars off the road.  There was a jeep upside down and a big Semi on its side with lots of food scattered all over the place.  I was very grateful that our little incident was not as bad as those.  We ate at McDonald’s then got back on the road.  I think I was in shock at first because I was feeling ok, but after eating I really didn’t want to drive again.  I told Doug to go slow and we went about 60 for quite a while.  As the roads got a bit better we sped up a bit –but it was not a fun drive.  It was still misty and the roads were wet and there was more traffic.  As we got into Fort Worth there was construction and the roads were a spaghetti bowl.  Other cars got between Doug and I had hard time following him.  We had to take some quick exits and there was lots of merging (I really don’t like this type of driving) and it was still splashy and hard to see.  I was in tears at the end.  I was very glad to get to our hotel and was dreading the last drive the next day.

We got settled and played some games; Doug went and got Panda Express for us for dinner.  We didn’t get to swim this time since it was an outdoor pool and it was cold and rainy.  Doug and I spent a lot of time getting ready for the next day after the kids went to bed.  Doug was going to leave early with Damon so I was going to have to load everything up and get the rest of the kids ready by myself.  So we packed as much stuff into the van as we could in the evening so it would be easier for me.  Doug was going early so he could meet the movers around 10 to start unloading our stuff.  It seems like we went to bed late then Jenna got up early in the morning and slept with me and then we had to get up an hour later – so we were tired.

Friday January 2, Doug and Damon got off ok, around 6:00.  We were making our last stretch today.  From Fort Worth to Spring it measured to be about a 4 hour drive.  I got everything packed quickly and was ready to go at 8:45, but then I let the kids finish their show they were watching so we headed out the door around 9:00.  Then by the time it took to buckle everyone and get the DVD player started and get the google maps navigation working through the car it was almost 9:40 – a much later start than I had wanted.

I had looked at our route and wanted to make a bigger stretch before lunch and try to make it to a town called Buffalo – or a rest stop near there.  But because we left later I knew we probably wouldn’t make it that far.  Well it turned out that we had a different adventure in store.  As we were driving through the south part of Fort Worth there was a sign saying that the left two lanes up ahead were closed and traffic was backing up.  I knew I needed to exit left soon so I stayed over thinking that my exit would be just after whatever was causing the lane closures.  Well it turned out that there had been a big accident with a Semi-truck carrying a propane tank and they closed down the exit I was supposed to take.  I had actually seen the news footage of this accident at the hotel when I was getting breakfast, but it hadn’t been on the road I was taking so I wasn’t worried about it.  Well they had to block this road too because they were concerned of a possible explosion.  So I was very grateful for my smart phone rerouting me since I couldn't go the way I had planned.   When I was told to exit I pulled over to stop and look at the map to make sure this new way looked ok.  It was a bit longer, but it would get us there.

The kids were being pretty good and both girls napped early.  We stopped at a small town called Mexia.  Kaylee was pretty upset for the 20 minutes before we got there.  We just had a bathroom break at a gas station and I let them each pick out a small treat.  I had made them lunches so I wouldn’t have to do the McDonald’s thing on my own.  So they just ate their lunches as we continued on.  Soon we got onto I-45 which is the main highway that goes into Spring.  I was getting so tired of driving.  The detour added an extra hour to the drive and I just wanted to done.  It was still rainy, but it was warm enough not to be icy.  The traffic wasn't too bad, but there were some areas with heavier rain that made it hard to see.  I couldn't see past two cars in front of me because of the splash.
Finally we took the Rayford Road exit.  I knew I just had to stay on this road until it ended at our subdivision.  It was great to pull up to our house and see Doug.  I picked up Damon and took the kids to a neighbor’s house.  I love the RS for helping us find places for the kids to play.  I helped Doug put beds together and direct the flow of boxes.  The kids ate dinner while they were gone and we had another friend bring dinner to the house so Doug and I had something.

The movers finished in the evening and we were officially into our house.  I didn't sleep well that first night.  There were new sounds.  When the heater turned on and off there were some flaps that made a pretty loud sound as they opened and closed.  A train woke me up as well and then Jenna and Chris both got up in the night – not much sleep happened.  But we had made it and that was a huge accomplishment!!

Last pics from Firestone

Well, here a few last pictures from Colorado:

The day after Christmas it snowed and the kids had a lot of fun playing in it.  It was powdery so we couldn't make a snow man or fort, but we could shovel it all into a pile and make a small hill to slide down.  Doug was on the ball and made the "Last Snow" sign.  I was glad that they got to play in the snow one last time before the move to Texas.

New sweaters that they wore to church.

 Cute girls!
Our neighbors threw a going away open house for us on the Saturday after Christmas.  It was nice to visit with friends and eat some yummy food.  Thanks Ben and Claudia.
I knew I wouldn't get this project done for a long time unless I did it before the move.  I managed to put together some dresses for these dolls.  The fabric was stretchy so I didn't have to deal with button or any type of fastener.  The sleeves were a pain though :).  I really don't know how you would make Barbie clothes, they are just too little.
