Twin Update 5/17 2 weeks old
It's hard to believe that the girls are 2 weeks old. They have done so well. Here is what has been happening Monday through Thursday:
We have sort of gotten into a routine this week. I unpack in the morning, leave for the hospital around 11, stay for two feedings, and leave the hospital around 4:30-5:00pm. Mom has been good to have dinner ready for us and the boys, thanks mom. Then we unpack some more, and then Doug and I go back to the girls from 8:15-10:45. It's crazy, but it works pretty well. Today I went to the hospital early so I can pick up a few things and help with dinner.
The girls are doing great, the nurses are all surprised with how well they are doing. I am sure it is because of all the prayers in their behalf. Jenna will be coming home this weekend. Kaylee still has a feeding tube, so she will have to get eating better before she can leave. (Jenna's tube came out on Monday). She actually nurses better than Jenna, but still not getting a full feeding in. Jenna inhales her bottles now, so she is doing great. Just an FYI, they are eating about 35-40 mL a feeding, which is about 1/8 of a cup. (1 oz). Crazy how little they still are. Jenna is weighing 4 lbs 12 oz and Kaylee is 4 lbs 6 oz. gaining About 1/2 lb since birth. I helped give the girls another bath on Tuesday. Their hair gets all cute and fluffy like Chris's was. They took out Kaylee's oxygen tube 2 hours ago, we will she how she does with out it. Jenna is still on oxygen. (Kaylee only lasted 45 min. with out it.)
Damon has been going to school and I think has made some friends. I wish I was there to see the kids and moms more. One class mate leaves right behind us, and partially shares our back fence. I hope he is a good boy and could be a good friend. Tyler and Chris have fun with Grandma, she is so good with them. I think they are all missing us with our busy schedule. It will be nice when we don't have to go to the hospital as much.
Thanks again for everything, it's about time for their feeding again, so gotta go.
C'Anne
Doug has been crazy busy with work and getting the house together. He is amazing, I couldn't do this without him. We went furniture shopping last night. We may actually get some new stuff and have our house look respectable. Nice to not always have yard sale couches.
(Later: Jenna took 50 mL while nursing today, that was great, she didn't have to have a bottle at all after, yeah!) - they weigh them before and after so we know how much they are eating.

Petersen Update 5/13
Sorry, been a bit busy to send an update, so here's whats been going on
with us. You can skim it if you want, I put in some things that were
more for me to remember.
The house is a mess, but we are slowly getting our house together. We ended up being glad that the movers didn't come until Thursday morning. Wednesday was crazy just getting things out of the van and truck. We ate dinner at a ward members house, then Doug took Eric, his brother who had driven the truck over, back to the airport so he could go home. I was going to camp out with the family, but Doug said I should go back and stay at the hospital one more time. I actually had to sleep on the couch in their "family" room because they had a lot of moms come in. But it was fine. Not much sleep, bed at 1:30, up at 5:30.
Thursday, I stayed with the girls until after lunch, then someone from the ward picked me up. 4-5 sisters from the ward came over in the morning and helped clean. The previous owners hadn't done anything. The kitchen cupboards were full of crumbs and the bathrooms were bad. I am so grateful for those sisters and my mom, we wouldn't have been able to unpack anything until it was clean. Another mom took the boys all day so the cleaning and unpacking was easier. They had a great time and are already making friends, I just wish I could be getting to know the moms as well. Doug and I go over to the hospital in the evening for their 9:00 feeding. It takes about 1-1 1/2 hours then 25 minutes to drive home.
Friday was similar to Thursday. Some ladies came and helped for awhile while I was still home. The boys played at a neighbors. I went to the hospital from 11-5. Ward members have also been bringing over dinner, which has been so nice. We unpack a bit more then Doug and I go over again to visit the girls in the evening. We stopped by Walmart on the way home and bought a few things for Tyler's birthday. It will be a simple birthday this year, but we will try to make it fun.
Saturday was pretty busy. My mom and I went to the hospital at 8:30, getting lost leaving our neighborhood. I guess I hadn't paid close enough attention on all my trips. Anyway, we made it and mom finally got to see the girls. She has been getting over a cold, so we are being cautious with her visits. The boys haven't seen them yet, Chris and Tyler have coughs. At 10:30 mom and I went to a consignment sale at the local fairgrounds. (Emily, you would have loved it). It was like the yard sale of all yard sales, or like the DI specialized for kids with nicer things. We could have spent all day there, but we managed to finds lots of fun things in just two hours. I got another saucer play thing for the girls for $10, and a nicer changing table too. There were tons of clothes and toys, we picked out a few. I still haven't really looked at what I have so I didn't buy too much. I did find some really cute shoes, even the Robeez brand for pretty cheap, and some small bows too.
We made it back home and had some lunch. I wanted to go furniture shopping with Doug, but we realized that we needed to finish unpacking first to make room for it all. So Doug and I went back into town, he dropped me off with the girls and went and got the oil changed in the car, then came back to have some time with them. They like the sound of his deep voice and perk up when they hear it. This way we wouldn't need to go back in later in the evening. I fell asleep on the way home and had a nice power nap in our driveway.
We tackled half of the kitchen in the evening. I was feeling pretty tired from all of the errands, but we managed to clear off all of the table and counters, so at least the kitchen was somewhat functional. We still haven't found the silverware so we are using plastic, but the plates and cups are there. We are cooking dinner today and we haven't found the pots and pans yet either, so we are using the crockpot and having baked potatoes. It wouldn't be so bad except the movers boxed everything, so we really don't know what is in each box.
So then we got things ready for Tyler's birthday, mom was great and made Tyler's cake. I was just too tired. We put out some presents, wrapping some in the paper the moving company used to wrap fragile items. He was still excited to open them this morning. He got a Star Wars Lego set and Nerf gun from us, along with a movie and some clothes. My mom gave him a Finn McMissile Lego set, some Play Doh, clothes, and a puzzle. Damon and Tyler each built a Lego set and Chris played with the Play Doh this morning and had lots of fun.
I am now at the hospital again, taking it easy while the rest go to church. The girls are doing very well. They are taking more from a bottle each day, needing their tube feedings less, they just put in whatever they didn't finish on their own. They are still gaining weight gradually, some days they stay the same, Jenna has dropped once, but still doing well over all. I can't remember if I mentioned their ultrasounds on their hearts, but they turned out fine. They have a valve that isn't fully grown yet, but will in the next few weeks. They are still on oxygen, but that is ok and could go home on that if they needed to. Now they just need to keep growing and learn how to eat on their own. They have tried to nurse occasionally, and they are slowing progressing with that as well.
Thanks again for all your prayers and support. The computer got hooked up yesterday, so I am hoping to put some pictures on our blog later today.
Happy Mother's Day to all,

Moving Pictures
So I figured I needed to document our move with a few pictures. I wasn't there for any of it, but I'm glad Doug and my mom took some pictures. First we have our Vernal house in boxes:
Now, entering our new house for the first time:
I wish we would have taken more pictures, there were more boxes than this and more mess everywhere, but it is all good now, just the basement still has some unpacking and organizing to do. Doug bought some more shelves so we can put stuff away. (written on 6/25/2012)

Twins Update 5/8 6 days old
Morning everyone,
Well, the IV's came out last night, which is so nice to have one less cord hooked to them. But they both got put on oxygen, so we gained another cord. I am glad for the oxygen though. They were just having so many times when the alarm would sound and you had to try and get their blood oxygen levels up. So now we don't have those anxious moments. They really are fine, just needing a bit of help to keep everything normal. They are eating about 1 oz at every feeding now, which is about 6 times what they started with. Kaylee is up to her birth weight now and I think Jenna is close, I haven't heard what she weighed last. They both had ultrasounds on their hearts yesterday. They both have a small murmur and they wanted to check it out. It is a normal preemie condition where a flap isn't closing properly, but it should fix itself in a couple of weeks.
I stay busy with all the feedings, it was almost too much yesterday, feeling a bit overwhelmed. But the nurses here have been great and they helped me feel better. It also helps if I'm not hungry or tired.
Doug says the house is all boxed up. They will load up the moving truck today. We found out yesterday that they still might not deliver our stuff until Thursday. Doug is going to talk to them. I don't see what the problem is, I know they will have it all loaded by this afternoon, why can't they just drive out on Wednesday. Anyway we may have an empty house for a day, but oh well.
The ward has set up lots of help for us with unpacking, watching the boys, and meals. I am so grateful for the church and the support that it gives. Some of the men in the ward came over and gave the girls a blessing too.
Life goes on, one day at a time. We will all be together tomorrow, yeah! Thanks for all you help and support.

I got to give them a bath on the 9th, they were 1 week old. Kaylee's pictures are first, in the pink outfit. I love their fluffy hair.
I got lucky with this shot of Kaylee, love those baby smiles.

Twins Update 5/6 4 days old
Here are some more updates if you are interested.
I was officially discharged on Saturday, but the hospital will let me stay in a room as long they don't need it. This is great so that I won't have to stay with someone in Firestone and have to deal with trying to get to the girls each day. I am sore and tired, but I am so grateful that I have this time to really heal and not have to deal with the boys and everything. Doug is in Vernal now, packing and getting ready for the movers.
I have sort of gotten into a routine with the girls today. I pump then go down to the NICU and help with their feeding, changing diapers and stuff. It takes about about 45 minutes for each, so I'm usually there for two hours, then I have a 45 minute break back in my room then we do it all over again. I like holding the girls, but the room is so warm in there I am usually falling asleep towards the end and getting all sweaty. We gave them a bit a milk in a bottle this last feeding. They did pretty well. They forget to breathe when they are sucking, so you have to stop and take the bottle out. Jenna spit up some of hers, but did well, probably eating around 12 mL, Kaylee ate 3mL from the bottle then got the rest from her feeding tube. They are digesting better, having very little left in their tummies from the previous feeding.
Jenna got taken off of the Billi-lights today, her jaundice is getting better. (she only had to be under them for one day). Kaylee is still borderline. They will test her again tomorrow to see if she needs them. (she didn't)
I got a complimentary massage today, part of the post delivery treatment here, it was very nice. I even squeezed in a power nap before lunch and the next feeding. They still provide my meals since I am nursing. We really have been so blessed that I can be here so easily to help with the girls.
Things are going well, we will just keep hoping that the girls stay headed in the right direction. Thanks for the family fast and prayers, they are helping I am sure.
I am getting excited to see the boys and my mom, and to move into our house. Then we will be able to send lots more pictures. They all look about the same right now anyway, bundled up with tubes in their noses.
Thanks again for everything

Twin Update 5/4 2 days old
Well, things are progressing here in Colorado. The girls are still
stable, they have lost a little weight, which of course is normal.
Jenna lost more than Kaylee, but she was bigger to begin with. The main
concerns we are dealing with right now are digestion and
heart/breathing episodes. The girls are being fed my milk via feeding
tube through their noses. Their little tummies are not digesting it as
well as we would like. They might take a break from the feedings for
awhile or just keep trying with smaller amounts. They are still getting
their nutrients through the IV so thats ok.
These other episodes are when their heart rate drops and then sometimes they have a little bit of apnea (they stop breathing). Most of the time they keep breathing, but when it does stop most of the time it's because their heads got tilted down too much and it is not letting the air get through. It's obviously a concern, but the nurses say that it is common with preterm babies and that it isn't happening too much. So hopefully as they get older and stronger they will outgrow that.
They both have a bit of jaundice, but we are waiting another day to test to see if they have to be under the lights.
I am feeling much better today. I am still sore, but able to walk around without wincing at every step. I basically eat, pump, nap, and visit the girls in the nursery. I got to take a quick nap while holding Jenna. They are so cute. We got a good picture of the two of them together. It's hard not having the desktop available, we will have to send more pictures when we can.
Doug is closing on the house right now, then he will drive back to Vernal. The final steps of the move are here. Soon we will all be back together. If the hospital has room they will let me board here since the girls are in the nicu. Everything is working out. Thank you all again for all the help, we couldn't have done this without you.

Ok, leading up to Tuesday evening (May 1) I had still been having contractions every day, sometimes every 7-10 minutes, other times farther apart. Sunday and Monday they were stronger and more frequent, but Tuesday seemed back to 'normal' again.
I had just laid down to go to sleep and then my water broke. This was at 11:30 pm. I've never seen the fluid before, since I've always been on the delivery bed, so I didn't know if it was normal or not to be a little bit bloody. I wasn't too concerned about but it definitely got us going. We grabbed a few things (forgetting the camera) and left the hotel to drive to the hospital. Doug had called the hospital and my Dr. to let them know what was going on. It's about a 40 minute drive from Brighton to Longmont, we made better time than that. :) We actually saw three sets of police cars on the way, but they were all pulling someone else over. I had a few contractions on the way and was feeling a bit a pressure, but it didn't feel like they were going to be born in the van.
We got to the hospital around 12:30 and of course I get hooked back up to the baby monitors. I got an IV put in and we waited for the doctor to get there, love the waiting game. The nurses had told him that there was more blood than normal so he was coming to check things out. They did some tests to see if the fluid was indeed amniotic fluid and it was, and he checked me and I was dilated to a 3 and was 90% effaced. He also did an ultra sound and both babies were head down.
So because of the abnormal bleeding he suspected that the placenta had torn or started to separate from the uterus. I guess this is a bad thing, I still don't what the consequences of that would be. So that ruled out waiting to deliver (sometimes they can still postpone delivery even when the water breaks but usually it's just a few days). So that left deciding between and regular delivery and a c-section. Again because of the placenta risk he thought it was safer for me and the girls to do a c-section. So we then started to get prepped for that. They walked me through the procedure and had me sign some papers. Once all the doctors and anesthesiologist were there we were ready to go. Doug stayed outside, since operating rooms and him don't mix very well. I got a spinal tap and was relieved to go very numb. I had the shakes for almost the whole operation. I hate not being able to relax and not have control over my body shaking so much. It was a different experience to give birth this way. I didn't feel much, just some pressure, then I heard a baby cry. Then a minute later I heard another. The girls each had three doctors/nurses helping them, a neonatal Dr, a NICU nurse, and a breathing specialist. I had six people taking care of me: my doctor and another OB to help with the surgery, the anesthesiologist, and 3 nurses. They took the girls right to a incubator type crib and got them situated. After awhile they brought Jenna over close so I could see her and give her a kiss. They kept Kaylee in the crib. They both were receiving oxygen at this point. They were born at 2:40 and 2:41 am. Jenna weighed 4 lbs 6 oz and Kaylee weighed 3 lbs and 14 oz.
I went into the recovery room once they were done stitching me up, it took awhile. Doug was waiting for me there. Then we had to wait there for an hour to keep an eye on my vital signs. Then I was able to go into the nursey to see the girls. The doctors had come in while I was recovering and said that Jenna was doing really well. She was breathing on her own and just had an IV because her blood glucose levels were low (all of the boys had this too). Kaylee was having a harder time breathing. They kept her on the oxygen longer and checked some x-rays and did some tests. The outward signs looked better, but didn't match the results of one of the tests, so they tested again. By the time I saw her she had been taken off of oxygen and was doing pretty well. She also had an IV in. I got to hold both of them. They are so cute and so tiny. It was crazy to think that just a few hours ago they were inside me. They are identical since there was only one placenta.
They moved me to a post delivery room and I got hooked back up to monitors, this one for my heart beat, blood pressure, and leg compression wraps. They squeeze my calves like a blood pressure cuff, it is there to reduce the risk of blood clots. They are more obnoxious now because they are making it so I can't sleep. And one of the other medicines is making my face all itchy. I am writing this at about 7:00 am, having been up all night.
We called my mom at 5:30ish and then Doug left to go back to the hotel to get some sleep. I am hoping that I can sleep if I can get used to these leg things.
So I think that is the whole story. It feels nice to not be pregnant anymore, but I hope and pray that the girls will be ok. Thanks again to all for helping with the boys, it's nice to not have to worry about them right now.
